You know, sometimes when I hear new hits pumping out on the airwaves, I wonder whether there has been some confluence between musical technology and torture. If you have read Naomi Klein's rather scary book The Shock Doctrine, I think you know what I'm getting at. The number of beats per minute, the effects of sound on the human constitution--sometimes it all seems a little bit formulaic. But the sonic force beats me down, vocals sampled and oversampled atop themselves, nuclear beats. It seems a lot of studio trickery more than musical performances. Maybe its just the new American Idol reality.

But you know, technology doesn't have to be used in the pursuit of evil. Sometimes technological advances can be used to create amazing things. I have albums where people paste together disparate music, using different genres, styles and musical instruments from all over the globe. A lot of times its been hit or miss. I don't know precisely what it is about Invisible Clan, the musical collective overseen by Dan Harper, whether it is just great talent or the next generation of studio innovations. I have to believe it is a potent combination of both factors. In any event, I have to say I am pretty bowled over by this ambitious recording, which I heard about in the NY Times, of all places. The album strikes me as visionary.

A very simplistic thumbnail description of Street Clan (their 2nd album after Punt) would be a collaborative synthesis of Ethiopian music, Jamaican music & fiery post punk. And the music is aggressive sounding. But there are even more things going on here than that, including psychedelia, funk, dance, electronic, Sub-Saharan African music and even some Sonny Sharrock styled fusion guitar. It's not easy to play in a variety of styles well. But when you mix these styles together, seamlessly weaving back and forth you are simply on a level of greatness. On top of this you have some great vocalists performing like Jamaican singer Dennis Wint and the unbelievable Zewditu Tadesse. Hearing him sing is simply revelatory. I think if Joe Strummer were alive today, he would be praising this music to the high heavens.

Anyone who loves interesting music will definitely find a lot to love here. For me it does not get any better than the amazing Bone Flaps. For that song alone the album is worth purchase. A remarkable vocal by Tadesse, and its like he's being backed by New Zealand noise monsters Bailter Space. You have to hear this to believe it.

The crazy thing about this album is that I almost find it too long. I can't sit and listen to all 1.3 hrs on this disc at one time. There is too much going on here. But too much interesting music is of course not any sort of valid criticism. Every time I listen, I hear new things, new instrumentations and subtleties. And righteous echoey dub. Songs like Bone Flaps and Mutant Miners are realizations of fusion music that were in my head. Fusion Music in the dynamic way I always wished it could be.

Highest praise here. Check this out and be amazed. And I just checked out the website for Harper Diabete records. They actually manufacture their own high quality microphones in addition to making recordings.

Frome had not seen a moustache like it until Mr. B Gentlemen Rhymer tailored in tweed bowled into Frome.

FromeTV presenter Nigel Peirce quizzed him with questions from our producer Selina cuff on “the formula to stardom”, whether “Britain has got talent?” and ” if Frome needs to cultivate better chaps and chapettes?” Nigel also got him to play a bit of the banjolele for us in the green room.

Feeling as though the country has plummeted to a satirical bottom from which it may never recover, Mr.B valiantly strides across the country reconnecting hip-hop and the Queen’s English with his own invention of “Chap-hop”.

The Cheese & Grain was packed with pipes and moustaches as all saluted such songs as ‘All hail the chap’, ‘Crazy Knight’ & ‘Timothy’

Spooky Shenanigans with Ultrabreaks

It ’twas’ the Saturday before Halloween, the air clung to the shadows of the night like a frightened girl….until…Ultrabreaks hosted a Mutant Fancy Dress Special to welcome in the ‘witching season’.

Suddenly there was a stomping romp in town as all vamps, zombies, weirdos and assorted freaks got themselves down to the Bath Arms for some killer live Rock, Punk, Metal, and the unfathomable.

FromeTV were sent all a shiver in this Halo of freakish hell, we mesmerised by the deranged chaos of the HATERS and DOCTOR NUT. Then spellbound by the sparks zipping of the vinyl as Caustic Disko, DJ mutes, Clint Parsnip, Mikael Trifle, Tuppeny Warlok and Needy Daft Klump electrified the vinyl.

To top off a supremely hellish night we bumped into visual partner, Vaughn Jublees, who also features in this film.

HATERS play loud, hard and fast (very!) and are influenced by bands like Billy Talent & The Hives and push the boundries of common courtesy when it come to lyrics (where they're often about pirates, drunkness, dreadful sex and even worse dental care!!) the guys are playing A CLOCKWORK ORANGE THEMED SET, and would like to announce that anyone who comes dressed the part to join in will get a free CD, what a lovely bunch of fellas!

Dr Nut play really bizarre alternative rock set, highly Cardiacs influenced mixed with medi-evil tomfoolery & bonkers lyrics. expect much 'owling about' (you'll have to come to find out what means) and maybe even some norwegian black metal, just for good measure.

Sticking true to our promise that we want to remain the biggest and most varied night out in town, and to help heat up the final days of summer/early autumn or whatever it is, this month we've drafted in some specialist bass selectors to rock the house in room 1.

Presenting DJ's SPEC-K, LIGHTSIDE, DEPHECT, MR L and guests, the cream of the Frome bass driven scene dropping the biggest, murderous b-lines on the dancefloor..i'm sure most of you guy's know what this means.. BOOM!

Room 2 witnesses residents DJ BARRY BREAKS & VJ ULTRA dropping their funked out brand of dancefloor funk and beats and visual gems, GHETTO FUNK STYLE!
There's also a fantastic opportunity to catch a rare DJ set from INVISIBLE SYSTEM head honcho DAN HARPER.. we'd need a whole day of your life to list Dan's many achievements as a super-talented-musician, so to give you an idea about what he's playing, it's likely to be a modern bridge between Ethiopia, Jamaica and the UK in his own way, with the decks, laptops, CDJ's, maybe even a coffee machine. Just as well he know's his way around a range of kit!
No doubt about it, it's worth the visit on it's own if you ask us.

Following a massive series of unmissable parties at Bijou DJ BARRY BREAKS & VJ ULTRA host another big night of madness back at the scene of the awesome HAIRY ANIMAL DISKO PARTY, and the mighty GRINGO SKA gig at BIJOU.. with a chunky night of BIG GHETTO FUNK BEATS and a HYPED VISUAL SHOW in room 1.

The boys are joined on the night by local legends (fromepeople.com local legend winners 2011) THE WHEEL OF FOUR TUNES who'll be taking over room 2, hosted by DJ SPIN & MC TIPPERCOOL.. for anyone out there who hasn't had the pleasure of seeing these guys before, we'll leave it up to the them to describe what they do:

Turin Brakes live at the Cheese & Grain.

To launch 2011’s Frome Festival platinum-selling folk band, Turin Brakes, performed to a sell-out crowd. In front of over 800 people at the Cheese & Grain the band played their unique mix of poetic melodies, dark folk and energised guitars.

Turin Brakes burst on to the music scene in 2001 with their Mercury nominated debut album, The Optimist. But it was their second album Ether Song that gained them chart success with a top ten single, ‘Painkiller’. After mainstream success the band parted ways with record label EMI, unhappy with the way they were being packaged.

It seemed- despite critical and popular acclaim- Turin Brakes may fall into obscurity.

But then a chance meeting with a reasonably well known boy band led to them writing a track, ‘Here’, for Take That’s Circus LP. The royalties from the song provided Turin Brakes with the means to make their fifth studio album, Outbursts in 2010. And Turin Brakes were back on the music scene, this time under their own terms.

In the ten years the band has been making music they have discovered a few things. “The less people in between us and the people who like are music the better,” Olly Knight, lead singer told FromeTV.

FromeTV- with kind permission from drummer and band manager, Rob Allum- filmed the Cheese & Grain gig. Featuring an interview with lead singer Olly Knight and live footage of songs ‘Sea Change’, ‘Stone Thrown’ and the Chris Isaak cover ‘Wicked Game’ with Tom McRae.

*Turin Brakes will be embarking on a national tour from November 7th to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their debut album ‘The Optimist’.

Continuing the solid start to 2011 we're back with our BIGGEST jam yet, and a night that promises to be packed with mad twists-and-turns at what is fast becoming known as the HEAVIEST social night out in Frome, there's a LOT to get through here so i'll crack on..

Tonights very special guests are the magnificent HAIRY PARENTS. This LEGENDARY WEST-COUNTRY HIP HOP collective have consistantly been masters of their craft for years, ( local b-boys of advancing years may recognise this crew from previous incarnations as TRANSCRIPT CARRIERS, PARLOUR TALK, UNDIVIDED ATTENTION and ALL CREATURES) with an top drawer back catalogue including the highly acclaimed PARLOUR TALK album 'Padlocked Tonic' which is considered by many in the industry to be one of the BEST UK HIP HOP ALBUMS EVER..
Sadly this is both a reunion and the LAST TIME THEY PLAY TOGETHER as a unit, for reasons best explained in their own words "Failed Severn Valley Enterprise faces the harsh realities of commerce" The whole band are coming to town, so it's a huge privilege to welcome them back to Frome ...

If that wasn't enough, we're also honoured to present Fromes original minimalist post punk band ANIMALS AND MEN, who recorded some classic singles in the early eighties that were distributed by Rough Trade, and picked up positive reviews in NME. With a heavy and sparse garage soundscape not too dissimilar to an early Velvet Underground (in my humble opinion!) or in the bands own words "Somerset post punk pioneers and d-i-y - from the early 80s and now " A&M are hailed as an influence on many of todays post punk bands, they're now back with new material and are on their final UK stop before flying out to San Francisco to play a series of stateside gigs ... it promises to be explosive!

The event will include theory and practice. The conference steps into workshops, how-to’s, panels and discussions of experts. Close connected to the talks the festival will showcase talents, unknown or extraordinary musicians and VJs, that embrace the concept of the Creative Commons http://creativecommons.org/ and the chance, that the new media brings, instead of demonizing them.

Although netlabels play a central role in this years festival, it is by far not limited only to music. More generally the focus is on Creative Commons everything related to art and media – with the rise of a new cultural economy and perspectives for young artists in mind.

Vj Ultra exhibited his Video Art 'No Sacred Land' http://www.artrmx.com/165.html at the Fisrt Cologne Art rmx Exhibiton with the subject 'where is my mind' along with 50 other artists from around the world. The catagories involved were Photography, Street Art, Graphics, Painting, Video Art, Sculpture and Installation. the exhibition lasted 8 days and the artists were given different locations around the beautiful city of Cologne in Germany to show there work off. http://www.artrmx.com/artrmxcologne.html .
